Performance…

What do you understand by performance ? It was asked in the HRM class when we were about to study performance appraisal..We were asked to visualize performance and speak out what comes in our mind..Like me everyone was visualizing the definition of performance…and came up with different definition…like doing of assigned task…etc…Something which is measured…

Then Prof. said first thing which comes in his mind is the performance of actor in any movie…then his own example of performing by coming to class and moderating the discussion..students performing by participating in the discussion and some by simply listening…:) and then a series of example…a dancer performing on stage….a singer singing a song…an artist drawing a picture..seems every act we do is a performance…

Oh wow..i m also performing by writing this blog entry…

Once again Shakespeare’s words are proved-

All the world’s a stage…

And all the men and women merely players…(or performers…)

I think its a great feeling when we realize that whenever we do something we are performing and it is continuously measured on some scale and accordingly we get rewards in our life..Its an internal motivation as performance in itself brings the best out of us…if we realize this fact that we give performance every minute every second in our life we will never feel afraid of doing something on public stage…

However if we visualize deeply, we can see a big irony…we perform better on bigger stage (i.e. our daily life where our audience is whole world, few billions) and feel nervous when on small stage in front of few people (few 100s)..

I think visualization is the most important tool…Those who have visualized this fact will never fail in giving their best whether the audience is in 100s or 1000s…And moreover life occurrences(whether good or bad) can be taken as a result of one of their performance only..

I feel it makes us aware of our responsibility towards our own life…

One of the best guest lectures so far in our department by Mr. Ashok Krish

Krish, a well known blogger, was in our department to share Web2.0 power in marketing communication..A dynamic personality with multi talents..He is Head, Web2.0 Innovation Lab at Tata Consultancy Services..It was great fun with learning..

He illustrated us about the increasing power of Web2.0 in today’s world..He compared Web2.0 philosophy with the Ant’s philosophy of working of leaving a filament to trace the path to the target..Web2.0 tool Twitter is quite similar to that..and if we have not left our filament on this web world we are really missing something in our life..

He illustrated the topic under 5 points – Architecture of participation, Cathedral vs Baazar, Wisdom of crowds, Software above the level of single device, Rich User Interface…

I really like the way he explained the concept of Web 1.0,2.0 and 3.0..web 1.0 was the availability of documents on the world web..Web2.0 is the virtual world of people who are connected to each other..They interact, share, discuss, learn, gossip, exchange views, come out with innovative things which are useful for others etc..Coming era will be of Web3.0 which will be more powerful than web 2.0 in the sense that it will give all the things which a person wants..it will take us to the person or contents directly according to our needs..

He also gave us an ultimate “Time Management Mantra”.. Everyone complains about the time when asked to do something extra in their life.. Being a multi tasker, Krish disclosed his mantra (given to him by his boss at TCS) of keeping account of each hour of his day..this helps in knowing where we can find time to do something which we really want to do and thus making our life enjoyable..

He gave us insight into strategies employed by various companies to promote their product using You tube videos…how Amazon remains the leader by giving complete details(including ranking) about a product and appreciating user’s contribution towards a particular product..He gave a greatest funda of marketing that ” Attention is always monetized”..Web 2.0 is a world of “Professional Amateur”..So there is a great opportunity to excel..

It was a memorable experience with him and all credit goes to UMA MA’AM..Kudos to you Ma’am..Thanks a lot to Mr. Krish for coming to our department..

2nd phase of DMS after 24 days of holiday @ home..

Coming back to Pondy after 24 days stay at home and weather here is not allowing me to reach dere early..my flight is getting delayed and delayed..now its scheduled at 10.30pm..lets see when i reach pondy..

Lots of stuffs are already due..hope it will be a great fun again as it was in first phase..i m looking forward to it…

SYNAPSE – DAY 1

Convention Hall,

9.30 am

The inauguration of SYNAPSE was scheduled at 9.30am and we were asked to report the Convention Hall @ 9.00 am..The Chief Guest invited was Mr. Dilip Kapur,CEO, Hi-Design, the first company to have its production base in India and its market outside India.. But the Indian market started growing up it got its market in India as well..and the global crisis make the company to increase its percentage in Indian market to above 50..

It was a great beginning with a 2hour interaction session with Mr. Dilip, where each one of us tried to take out everything requires to become a successful entrepreneur… How he started, how he continued, what all difficulties he faced, what are major challenges etc. The thing which he insisted on was “Willingness to make mistake while working and taking lessons from them in future”..

He also emphasized on three things which are most important in any person and they are an individual should be Innovative, Creative, and should have Self-confidence…These qualities will take any individual to any level he desires to be in his life..He also emphasized on a SIMPLICITY… He also quoted Aurobindo’s words “Greatest beauty is Simplicity” and he works on this concept. He came to meet the students and interact with us and he was really happy after meeting all of us..

Next was the first panel discussion..CEO Panel..The discussion was on our SYNAPSE THEME

” GLOBAL INTEGRATION: OUTLOOK FOR THE FUTURE”

We had four CEOs from 4 different areas.. Mr. V Ramachandran, CEO, Management & Mr. Mohan Narayanan, CEO, Kubos Consultancy Services, Mr. C. S. Dwivedi, Vice President -Mfg, HCL Infosystems, Mr. Shyam Madhavan, CEO, Wannabe Studios.

Mr. V Ramachandran started the discussion and focussed on acquiring knowledge, globalization, focusing on what needs to be done and global outlook…

Mr. V Ramachandran was followed by Mr. Shyam. Mr. Shyam, one of our Alumnus has recently directed first movie based on Guirrela marketing concept..He focused on ONE WORLD-NEW WORLD concept..He tried to clear us one thing that Web2.0 is only a means to enhance communication on a global platform..It is no different from the real world..All the management techniques which applies to real world also applies to the Web2.0 world, as behind the screen its all human..He ended his discussion by quoting “In business we don’t get what we want but we get what we negotiate”.

Next was Mr. Mohan, and he spoke on focusing Feel Good perspective, value of Human Capital,Change Management consisting of two issues – Cultural Issue and People Issue, Cloud computing etc.

Next was Mr. Dwivedi, moderator for the panel, who tried to consolidate the points and adding few from his behalf which included thought process, need to be strategist.. He also shared a very interesting fact that Most of the things start as a compulsion and later it becomes a Great Desire..Mobile phones are the best example of it.. He also told a great relation between Right decision, Experience and Wrong Decision. All these three forms a cycle and helps in the growth of the organisation.

The discussion was followed by the question answer session between the students and the panelist where more and more doubts were cleared by us regarding the issues discussed.

As well said, Wisdom speaks up and always delivers something great..Today we also got a great opportunity to learn from these experts which will really gonna benefit us in a long run…

Tomorrow we have three panel discussions: Marketing, HR and Finance Panel..Looking forward for an enriching experience..gud nite..

SYNAPSE- An Industrial Institute Interface

SYNAPSE, the most awaited event of Department of Management Studies, a platform to practically experience all the lessons of Management by organizing it at such a large scale. Eminent personalities from corporate world are invited to discuss on the current issues and providing a new dimension of thinking for the future managers..Sharing the unexplored areas which can be easily explored and motivating the students towards the entrepreneurial line.

SYNAPSE this year is scheduled on 11th, 12th and 13th December 2009..I chose to be a part of PANEL Committee whose role is to fix the panelists by inviting the corporate experts in their field. It was really the most typical job. But its really very interesting to do it. The biggest problem for this committee is to keep the confirmation of panelist live till the last day.just prior to the week of the event many of them cancels owing to important assignments in their organisation. Working under such a crisis and arranging for new ones is really headache..But managers are there to manage the everything even in crisis and thats what is the fact that keeps us driving..

Our work started two months back in October itself as our exams were scheduled in between…We were the first committee to began our work and immediately after the semesters first one to get back on to the work..

ONE WEEK PRIOR TO SYNAPSE

Wow this was the great time..Every committee was in progress and moreover our semester results were also expected..Long meetings were going on among the faculty members to decide upon our result..it was expected to be out on Thursday , a week before the SYNAPSE..but it keep on postponing..Daily we have stories results are coming today results are coming..The fever for SYNAPSE and Results was going parallel…Panelist were confirming and few were cancelling.. Magazine was to be published.. And articles were asked from the student.. Daily I get reminder from Maria, Head magazine committee, submit ur article submit ur article… and me yaa sure Maria give me some time, i m not getting time..

In between i was also asked to do the design committee work as i worked for the Design committee during MILAN, our Alumni Meet..I went on with this work also and designed Invitation and Banners along with the senior Karthik..

Looking forward for a great interaction and knowledge enriching experience in coming days..

Its been a long time I m writing back..lots of events occurred in between..Major among them were Milan ’09 and recently my Semesters…I wish to be regular now..

Today we started with our new semester, 2nd semester..The real essence of MBA..All the specialization together in one semester..Wow!! its really exciting..Started with a Project Management class by Charu Mam, which is full of activities, a full semester Man-meet program.. Most of the activities are similar to that…Role plays, Business Plans etc…On the very first day deadlines for everything is final..

Next was UC mam class..The most awaited class since we joined here..UC is taking our Marketing Management..It was simply great as expected…Marketing and Branding..The two core words around which every business is revolving in the whole world…How marketing is used for branding and unbranding..What are the areas which need branding and what are the areas that need unbranding..how marketing for unbranding is going on now a daz..PETA & SPCA initiatives..

Demand is created with three things – Need, Want and Purchasing Power.. Difference between Need and Want..Thirst is a need while water, cold drink etc are want…transportation is a need while owning a car is a want..How marketing is converting Needs into Wants so as to increase Demands..Types of demands and their existence in our day to day life..wow..it was really cooool…

Lots n lots of stuff for googling like blue cross, green marketing, milk vs soya etc. Came to know about www.ted.com a platform for sharing amazing Ideas..Pranav Mistry and his thrilling ideas about sixth sense technology..

The very first class is changing my mind towards my choice for the area of specialization…lets see where i land at the end of the semester…Overall great class great lessons in mere 100 mins..

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO ANGLO FRENCH TEXTILE

19th and 20th October, 2009

Industrial visit to Anglo French Textiles were taken on two days with two sets of students.

It started at 2.30pm and ended around 5.30 pm.

Anglo French Textiles(AFT) is one of the oldest (104 years) textile firm in India. 25 years ago it was overtaken by Government of Pondicherry.

Once it had a huge strength of 2600 worker working together.But like most other textile industry, this industry is also worst hit by recession. And the current strength has been educed to 1500. Still its able to continue its operation when a large number of textile industries are facing shutdown all over India.

It was one of the largest textile industry with the manufacturing base for all the intermediary stages. The very first process is of weaving of clothes from the yarn. They have a huge range of machines that produces different patterns of weaving. All the processing is done on a lot of 1000 meters.which gets rolled over the machine.

The output is the raw textile which is then manually looked for removing defects and other worms..This raw textile is very hard and it is further taken to different processes to get the desired product.

It was very interesting visit. We witnessed all the minute processes being carried out in making a cloth. The best part of the whole visit was the final stages of the textile production where it is stacked(as in above picture).Washing ironing and stacking all was done by a single giant machine that too 1500 meter cloth all together.

DIWALI CELEBRATION!!

HAPPY DIWALI!! It was the first Diwali away from home for most of us especially those who are from North. However, with the blessings of our faculty and love for DMS we all celebrated together in evening by burning crackers and enjoying sweets.

Being a festival of lights we all decorated the entire department with candles and diyas.

It was total fun celebrating festival with friends who are like our family.

After the department celebration we enjoyed University celebration which was organised by different department of university.

There we had delicious dinner followed by Dance Party.

It was really great to celebrate the festival with so much pomp and show even being away from home.

THE EXPECTATIONS!!

Hello friends,

In past few daz dere was lots of discussion on “Expectations”…and believe me it never ends between me and my friend..

The very first question that arises is- What exactly is expectation??

Well as far as i feel “it is to believe that other person will do something without even telling that person that he/she has to do that thing”.It is such an irony that many times it happens also…cos expectations are made on the basis of past experiences…it is build on the past actions/reactions of the individual..but when belief doesn’t comes true it hurts the person very badly…

Our life is full of expectations either we are expecting something from the other or someone else is expecting something from us…

The very basic expectation arises between a child and his/her parents…both of them have their own expectation from each other..and this forms a strong bonding between them…and here the relation develops…and then different feelings of love,anger, happiness everything comes into existence…

When we are small we are taught so many things..after the things have been taught it is automatically expected out of us…and if we dont do it we even get punished for that..And this teaches us to fulfill other expectations..his thing continues in our whole life..Similar expectation always exist..even we also form the similar expectations…

It is the expectations that help us gain so many things in our life..It makes us a perfect person in whatever we do..the higher the expectations the better the result..A very famous quotation

“Always aim for the sky, even if you miss you will land among stars”

It is so true and helps us in achieving our goals…Our goals are nothing but the expectations of ours from ourselves..

We start developing expectation from everyone we come through..We have expectations from our teacher, our friends, our colleagues and moreover we always expect general etiquettes from everyone(consciously or unconsciously)… Even if we meet any stranger and say hello to him we expect him to reply back…if he/she doesn’t replies we dont like it..

When expectations are not fulfilled it results in all the negative waves inside us..We started complaining, feeling bad, hating and everything…At extreme cases it results in conflicts also..

The question that arises is why do we get hurt when someone doesn’t fulfill our expectations…Can we really stop expecting in our life…?And how to control negative feelings when doesn’t fulfill our expectations…

As far as i feel its all our creation and destruction..So it can be controlled by us..

I request readers to please give your views on the above questions…
